Here’s a peek at my recent SpiritBeautyLounge order. Of course my favorite part of receiving an SBL package is the goodies inside, but I also love the entire presentation. The sweet pink tissue paper, the way in which each item has been carefully placed in the box, and the always generous samples make an SBL haul, a special haul.

I haven’t tried the Rahua hair samples yet, but you can be sure that lollipop went right into my mouth as I unearthed the Kahina Toning Mist that I’ve been wanting since I read Dain’s review as well as the Intelligent Nutrients Finishing Gloss that will replace my almost empty bottle.

I reviewed the IN Finishing Gloss last fall, and it’s back in heavy rotation this summer. I’ve taken to mixing a few pumps of the gloss with Weleda’s Rosemary Hair Oil and warming it all over my hands. I then run my fingers through my hair and pat the hair that frames my face to give it a little extra help tamping down the frizzies. A nice combing and an air drying gives me soft, pieced-out waves. Of course a great haircut also helps, but this method tames my thick, frizz-prone hair like nothing else.

In addition to my order, SBL included a Wild Rose Lip Balm by Phoenix Botanicals for me to sample for possible review, and I am so glad they did. I adore this little balm! Its cute design belies its 100% biodegradable packaging with sweet illustrations and a sturdy feel. I love how you pinch the bottom of the tube to access more balm which also makes it easy to use every last bit. The balm itself goes on smoothly and hydrates just as well as my holy grail of lip balms, Dr. Hauschka’s Lip Care Stick. The balm itself is a bit thinner than the Dr. H balm, but it feels supple and does the job.

As for the Kahina Toning Mist, I love it too. I would be hard pressed to do a more thorough job at reviewing the toner than Dain already has done, so please check out the above link to her blog, ARS Aromatica. Suffice to say, I am in full agreement with her rave review.

Oh, and I almost forgot to mention my fabulously efficacious Soapwalla Deodorant Cream! I wrote about this product last summer and am thrilled that SBL has included it in their offerings. It’s a simple, all natural deodorant that truly works.

Intelligent Nutrients Finishing Gloss is $29 for 1.7oz, Kahina Toning Mist is $36 for 1.6 oz, and the Phoenix Botanical Lip Balm is $6, Soapwalla Deodorant Cream is $10. All at SpiritBeautyLounge.com

I love checking out new hair products almost as much as I love exploring fragrance. Unfortunately, truly green hair care options are pretty limited. As most of you are fully aware, many companies claim to be made with natural ingredients which means there might be a smidge of lavender oil in the mix, but the rest is petrol derived or synthetic chemicals. On the other hand, when you do come across a shampoo or conditioner that is truly all natural, frequently it leaves your hair feeling like straw.

John Masters Organics has been my go-to brand for several years now, and even though I’m more than satisfied with my faves from that line (I just ordered another large bottle of their Neroli Detangler) I was anxious to check out something new on the green scene, Yarok.

Yarok literally means “green” in Hebrew, and thankfully the line lives up to its name. The ingredients are 100% natural, vegan, cruelty free and 3% of its profits go to the The Pachamama Alliance, a non-profit that protects over 10 million acres of rainforests in the Amazon. All of these facts led me to Yarok, but the high quality and efficacy of their products will keep me coming back.

I’ll start with my favorite from the line, the Feed Your Ends Leave-In Conditioner. It’s made with loads of organic oils like jojoba, evening primrose and apricot, and comes in a spray bottle that produces a fine mist that makes over-application almost impossible. The instructions read, “for use on damp hair prior to heat styling”. I do use this spray on my wet hair but always let it air dry, and the results have been wonderful. I still use my JMO Neroli Detangler as a leave-in conditioner as well, but Yarok adds some extra hydration. I also use a few sprays when my hair is dry which helps keep the frizzies under control and adds some curl definition to my sometimes unruly hair. Oils of rosemary and litsea cubeba impart a lemony herbal scent which I really like, but it dissipates almost instantly, so no worries if that combo doesn’t sound appealing.

Upon reading the tagline of Yarok’s Shampoo and Conditioner, “Feed Your Volume”, I wasn’t sure they’d become a part of my repertoire as volume is not what I need to be adding to my hair. But I gave it a go, and was highly pleased with the results. First off, I fell in love with the scent of the shampoo. It has an enticing sweet orange blossom fragrance that lingers gently after a shower. It foams nicely and readily and does not give your hair that dreaded straw-like feeling. It’s really a pleasure to use. The only negative thing I can say is that its price tag is steep, $26 for 8.5oz. Sadly, Feed Your Volume Shampoo won’t become my daily shampoo, but I would love to have a bottle on hand for selective use.

Like the shampoo, Feed Your Volume Conditioner is also very lovely and costs $26 for 8.5oz. It however, does not smell like orange blossoms, but rather vetiver. In fact, the vetiver scent is so strong that I would dissuade anyone from buying it who is not a fan. I am very fond of vetiver and loved it wafting from my hair throughout the day. Yarok’s conditioner is not heavy or terribly thick, but it does a good job as a detangler which is a must in my book. For someone with fine hair, this conditioner would be ideal. For me it works nicely, but requires a leave-in conditioner which is the case with most conditioners. I’ve also been testing their Feed Your Shine Hair Serum which I apply before swimming and it has kept my hair from becoming a hot mess. I love running this rich serum through my hair before getting into the pool as it makes putting on that unflattering swim cap worth the trouble.

Overall, I am very impressed with Yarok and am thrilled to have found such a fabulous leave-in conditioner that is super easy to use. I don’t mind paying the $22 for an 8oz bottle as it will last much longer than a bottle of shampoo. In fact, I’m pretty sure it will last several months. Speaking of shampoo, I might have to forgo the requisite request of perfume for Mother’s Day and ask for a couple bottles of Yarok’s instead.

Yarok is available at Yarokhair.com and one of the best etailers around, SpiritBeautyLounge

Can you believe the holiday season is already upon us? Thanksgiving will be here in a heartbeat, and the first night of Hanukkah is December 1st. So it’s time to hop to it and get gifting. I’ve gathered together some of my favorite bloggers (links below) to offer our recommendations for those special items on our to-give lists, and maybe even our own wish-lists. My list includes many price points ranging from $6.50 for a gorgeously scented soap to $325 for a precious limited edition perfume, with lots in between. As you might have guessed, all of my recommendations are 100% natural which means no petrochemicals, phthalates, synthetic fragrances, or parabens.

Urban Eden (Now Oilve and Oud) Shahrazad soap ($6.50 per bar) I recently reviewed Urban Eden soaps and at the time I had just started using my bar of Shahrazad. At this present moment, I have but a tiny sliver left and recently placed an order for another bar so I can continue to bask in its plentiful floral spiciness. Tuberose, frankincense, and cardamom are the standouts in this richly lathering soap that’s perfect for this time of year.

Gabriel’s Aunt tea light sampler. ($9 for a set of 10) After you spend some time at the Gabriel’s Aunt etsy shop, you’ll be glad you can choose 10 different tea lights in your sampler. Nikki Sherritt, creator of GA, has so many scrumptious scents to choose from that it really is hard to pick only a few. My favorite is Royal Couple ($25 for 8oz candle), a rose and jasmine blend that warms a room with a finespun throw. You can read more about her liquid and solid fragrances here and here.

Wing and Prayer mini sampler ($10 for three 1/8oz rollerball) This has got to be one of the best bargains in the natural perfume world. $10 for three nicely sized fragrances? Frankincense, neroli and a light touch of ylang ylang intertwine to create a comforting scent that will put a smile on the lucky recipient’s face. And not only is it beautifully fragranced, it is made with cold pressed, organic oils of sunflower seeds, sesame seeds, jojoba and apricot kernel so it feels as good as it smells.

Sometimes I spray it on my skin when it’s dry and I want to apply a body oil (such as evanhealy’s above) and I also mist my face with a hydrosol before using my serum. Currently, Organic Apoteke is my favorite because it’s soothing and hydrating. But honestly, I really love it because it smells so darn good. It’s like there’s a magic honey ingredient in this mist that lasts for hours and swirls around my skin amidst delicate rose petals. I’ve got this in the travel size, and you can be sure it’s going with me on my next plane ride.

And believe me, she has much to toast as Candide is truly beautiful. It radiates with sparkling notes of pink grapefruit, blood orange and raspberries all wrapped up in sueded jasmine petals. Its lush and enticing, but cheerful and flirtatious as well. A suggestion of frankincense affords a bit of grounding, but to be sure, Candide is lighthearted through and through.

I caved and bought Dimanche last spring, and have not regretted it for a second. It exudes two notes that I can’t seem to get enough of, hay and honey, in a surprisingly sophisticated and provocative manner. Well, if you wish you’d jumped at the chance to get Dimanche, Elektrou is quite similar, with a few distinct differences. Dimanche’s opening is on the sharp side due to the edginess iris sometimes possesses. Elektrou on the other hand is immediately soft with its vanilla and smooth amber accord. Sandalwood plays a large roll in Elektrou’s suppleness, emanating a sensual ease. It’s going to take serious restraint that I am not sure I have to keep myself for purchasing Elektrou as I want every scarf I own to smell just like it. It’s a splurge no doubt, but one that the perfumista in your life (which is probably yourself) will adore.

It might seem strange to combine a hair product review with a fragrance review, but in the world of Intelligent Nutrients, it makes perfect sense. All of their products are made to be used all over the body, even in the hair. Multi-use is encouraged throughout their website and I have taken them up on their recommendation as I use their Jasminas fragrance in my hair, and their Finishing Gloss on my skin.

Jasminas is a big name to live up to in my opinion. Of course a fragrance with such a name should be jasmine based and therefore somewhat bold, but I want it easy to wear. So kudos for Jasminas. Not only did it meet my expectations, but exceeded them as well. Jasminas is a terrifically audacious scent, bursting with juicy jasmine sambac in a macadamia seed oil base. It luxuriously smooths onto the skin and exudes the signature spicy, citrusy floral redolence of this tiny blossom which is also known as pikake if you are in Hawaii. Like a fresh lei of jasmine sambac around your neck, Jasminas swirls around your body as you move, delivering you to a warmer and more relaxing climate.

Add a few drops in your hand along with a pump of Intelligent Nutrients Finishing Gloss, and Jasmina’s scent will linger throughout the day in your softly smoothed hair. The Finishing Gloss includes a blend of jojoba oil, sesame oil, shea butter and beeswax which is a potent mix, so only a pea-sized pump or two is needed to tame my long curly-wavy-frizz prone hair. I use one pump if my hair is already dry and I want a polished pony-tail, and two pumps distributed evenly throughout my wet hair for supple waves. The scent is a mild sesame/neroli combo and I let any leftover product absorb into my hands, as the hydrating ingredients work just as well on the skin as it does the hair. I’m loving this feel-good, smell-good multi-tasking!

Intelligent Nutrients was founded by Horst M. Rechelbacher, the creator of Aveda which he sold to Estee Lauder in 1997. He continued consulting for Aveda until 2003 when he focused on creating Intelligent Nutrients, a company dedicated to using 100% food-based and organic certified ingredients.

I’m in a really good place with my shampoo and conditioner situation. I am still using and loving Giovanni’s 50/50 Balanced line with John Masters Organics (JMO) Citrus and Neroli Detangler as a leave-in conditioner. Once out of the shower, I smooth Weleda’s Rosemary Hair Oil all over my hands, and then run my fingers through my hair and air dry. I’ve tried some other shampoos, conditioners, and “products,” but this is the regimen I keep coming back to.

I am however, looking for ways to keep my hair fresh between shampoos to save on water and time, both being very precious resources. I was anxious to give John Masters Organics Shine On leave-in treatment a spin to see if it could assist me in my endeavor. It’s a thick gel without any scent, and distributes with ease despite its consistency. I’ve discovered that too much will easily make your hair greasy, and too little won’t do much for you, so it’s all about finding the perfect amount for your hair. I have long, thick hair and about a nickel-sized amount applied throughout damp hair does the job. It adds a little bit of extra shine, probably not noticeable to anyone but me, and helps my waves/curls maintain their shape. Honestly though, it wasn’t anything extraordinary. Not until I applied a little bit on my dry hair to tame frizzies did I discover Shine On’s true glory. All I need is a dime-sized dollop rubbed in my palms and gently smoothed on the spots that need some control. This is especially effective when I have my hair pulled back and my renegade strands need reining in.

While JMO’s Shine On helps me achieve a tidy “hair-pulled-back” look, Dr. Hauschka Neem Hair Lotion keeps me from feeling like I need to put my hair in a ponytail in order to look presentable. The Haucshka literature and on-line reviews tout Neem Hair Lotion as beneficial for oily and fine hair. It keeps the greasies at bay and adds body to fine hair. Well, I have neither of those, and I still love it. Much to my surprise, the extracts of neem, arnica, birch and calendula work wonders on dry, thick hair as well. I’m willing to concede that my following conclusion might be a placebo effect as I am a huge fan of Dr. H to begin with, but this little elixir gives me soft, shiny hair, even on day 3 or 4 post-shampoo. It’s now a part of my Dr. Hauschka arsenal.

Hair powders can also be used to combat the greasies and give life to your bed-head. My favorite is LuLu Organics Hair Powder, a talc free, essential oil fragranced powder. Other ingredients include organic corn starch, organic rice powder, and white clay. I only have a few samples of the powder from a local hair salon, but the full sized has beautiful labels that are hand-screened by The Paper Moon Project. Not only are they gorgeous to look at, the corn-starch based tubes are also recyclable and biodegradable. Since my hair and scalp lean dry, I don’t reach for the powder until 3 days of unwashed hair and prefer the Neem Hair Lotion for my daily needs. But for those of you with normal to oily hair, this is an ideal product, especially when you’ve got to hurry somewhere and don’t have time for a shower, or even after exercising. The samples I have are over 6 months old and the scents (I have lavender and jasmine) are very faint. They might be more pronounced in a fresh tube. Either way, these Hair Powders are sweet in their soliflore simplicity and practical in their efficacy.

All of the above products are 100% natural and contain certified organic ingredients.

John Masters Organics Shine On is $30 for a 4oz jar at SaffronRouge.com

Dr. Hauschka Neem Hair Oil is $29.95 at SaffronRouge.com

This spring, I was pretty much set in my haircare drill. Giovanni 50/50 shampoo and conditioner, along with John Masters Organics Citrus and Neroli Detangler left my hair clean, soft, and shiny, and continues to be the backbone of my routine. In HAIR: Part I, I had also become quite partial to hair oils rather than styling gels or creams, and Dr. Hauschka’s Neem Hair Oil was the first one I used and I found it to be very effective at taming frizzes, adding subtle gloss, and curl definition.

But, having a natural beauty blog means staying open to new products, especially when there’s interest from readers. My HAIR post continues to be one of Scent Hive’s most popular, so here are more reviews:

Aubrey Organics is a brand that has long interested me, and I can’t express enough how much I appreciated turning a conditioner bottle over to read the ingredients and seeing this statement at the top:

100% Natural Ingredients. No Parabens or Petrochemicals

At the bottom you’ll find: No Animal Testing, Vegan, Biodegradable

So Aubrey covers a lot of bases, including many organic ingredients of course. Since my hair is thick, wavy, and leans frizzy, I tried the Rose Mosqueta Nourishing Shampooand Island Naturals Replenishing Conditioner for starters.

Rose Mosqueta Shampoo, is wow…super scented. Rose musk anyone? And the scent lasts all day long. So if that’s a deal breaker for you, go ahead and jump to the conditioner review. It’s not entirely a deal breaker for me depending on the day. If I want my hair to be my scent of the day, then I’ll go for it because this shampoo is high quality. It has an excellent lather, which is not to say it will be sudsy like a mainstream shampoo, but for a natural shampoo, it’s lovely. My hair felt well hydrated after using Rose Mosqueta and was shiny to boot. I only wish it weren’t so intensely fragranced. I’ll admit that musk is not on my preferred scent list so I might be a bit sensitive to it. But if you like musk, you will love this shampoo.

Aubrey Organics Island Naturals Replenishing Conditioner also gets high praise for its performance. It’s thick and rich and I love its first ingredient; coconut fatty acid cream base. Give me more of that in my hair please! I love running a comb through my hair when it’s being conditioned, and this allowed for smooth combing action. (Not quite as effortless as John Masters Organics Citrus and Neroli Detangler, but smooth nonetheless). With a name like Island Naturals, I was expecting a tropical scent of pineapple, mango, coconut or a hint of gardenia, but instead found mint and rosemary on my head. Fine by me, just not what I was anticipating. Indeed, you will find balm mint and rosemary oil in the ingredient list, with some coconut as mentioned above, but apparently the aromatic herbs are too much for the little island fruit (or seed to get technical). Regardless, my thick hair met its match in Island Naturals Replenishing Conditioner and will be in rotation among Giovanni 50/50 and John Masters Organics Citrus and Neroli Detangler.

Aubrey Organics Honeysuckle Rose Conditioner says it’s for “Dry Brittle Hair”, but I found Island Naturals to be far more hydrating. The Island Naturals Replenishing provided so much moisture, that fine hair might be too weighted down by it, but I think the Honeysuckle Rose Conditioner could be doable in a small amount. If you find that starts coating it too much, give Blue Chamomile Hydrating Conditioner a try, it gets rave reviews on the Aubrey website from the gals with thin, fine hair.

As for styling products, I’ve been keeping it simple with hair oil after the shower. My routine: Towel dry, 3-6 drops of oil rubbed all over the hands, distribute through middle of hair, ends, then hairline. Comb it. Wrap it up in a clip for a while. Done. I’ve discovered Weleda Rosemary Hair Oil and have found my new favorite styling product. No doubt that Dr. Hauschka’s Neem Hair Oil is a quality product, but Weleda’s helps tame the frizzies a smidge better and makes my hair just a bit softer. And the rosemary scent is delicious.

For some fun, not so serious hair care, give John Masters Organics Sea Mist Sea Salt Spray with Lavender a go. While it added too much body to my hair, it would be perfect for someone whose thin hair needs some life. Or if you’ve got some bedhead and need to give it a boost, spritz this on and refresh your hair with a lavender scent and a little wave.

If you’ve got some favorite natural haircare products, by all means, please share your discoveries by hitting the comments button below!

Hair. Let’s face it. It’s a big deal. I dropped my non-green products cold-turkey. No problem. Sure, I still spritz a Guerlain or Chanel perfume once in a while, but my everyday products that didn’t make the environmentally friendly cut? Gone. Except one thing. My hair products. I clung onto those silicones and heavy weight conditioners for dear life. I was afraid. Very afraid, to see what kind of frizz-ball mess I would be left with if I abandoned the coating of 30 weight oil on my hair.

Let me put my hair in context. It’s very thick, wavy, and frizz-prone around the hair-line. My sister can vouch for this. Any time we go to the salon, the stylist invariably exclaims to us, “my god you two have a lot of hair”! It’s not a complaint, just laying the ground work here to let you know that if I can wean myself off the hard stuff, anyone can.

Giovanni’s 50/50 Balanced Shampoo was my scary leap into the no sodium lauryl sulfate (SLS) realm. SLS is a foaming agent that gives soaps, shampoos, toothpastes, etc a great lather, but also can be drying, as well as a skin and eye irritatant. I chose 50/50 Balanced because it got rave reviews on the hair care board at MakeupAlley and is reasonably priced. For a shampoo with no SLS, it foams nicely, which was my initial concern. It also smells pleasant, rinses well, and doesn’t leave my hair feeling like straw, which is a common complaint with natural shampoos. I now use Giovanni’s 50/50 routinely, but I like to mix it up a bit with John Masters Organics Lavender Rosemary Shampoo which lathers really well and smells amazing. The rosemary scent is fresh and invigorating. I also love Dr. Hauschka’s Macadamia Orange Shampoo, which has a bitter orange scent, and leaves my hair really soft. Both the John Masters and Dr. Hauschka shampoos would be my first choices, but they are more expensive than the 50/50 Balanced, so I use that more often. Costco used to carry 50/50 Balanced in large bottles, but from what I understand, it is harder to find there these days.

For my conditioner, I started with John Masters. His Citrus and Neroli Detangler got so many amazing reviews on MakeupAlley, I had to use it right off the bat when I was weaning myself off the silicone conditioners. I also used his Lavender and Avocado Intensive Conditioner to curb the shock of the withdrawal. Surprisingly, I found the Neroli Detangler to be so effective that I only needed the Intensive Conditioner a couple times a week, if that. Since my hair is so thick I also used, and still do, the Neroli Detangler as a leave-in conditioner. Again, this is not the cheapest product ever, so I did check out Giovanni’s 50/50 Balanced Conditioner, and I do like it, and use it regularly. But I always use the John Masters Neroli Detangler as a leave-in conditioner, no matter what.

I have to admit, it took me a lot longer to let go of the “out of the shower” routine. It was just one product, but I felt like it was the one thing that really kept the frizzies under control; Frederic Fekkai’s Glossing Cream. I was addicted to it and only found the courage to try something new about two or three months ago. Intelligent Nutrients Organic Styling Creme has made it easy to come off my Fekkai habit, which unfortunately contains petrochemicals, parabens, silicones, and possibly phthalates as “fragrance” is listed as an ingredient. Intelligent Nutrients Organic Styling Creme doesn’t have that creamy consistency, and it smells a bit like salad dressing, but it works and is 25% off here. And that slightly vinegary smell, it lasts for a mere two seconds and then it’s gone. I also have become a big fan ofDr. Hauschka Neem Hair Oil. Just a few drops rubbed in my palms and then distributed throughout the ends of my hair gives defined wavy curls and helps it last that way for a couple of days. The Neem Hair Oil is the only product I have mentioned thus far that might not be appropriate for those with fine or thin hair. It would most likely be too heavy as a little goes a long way.

So if you’ve been curious about switching to a greener shampoo and/or conditioner, my recommendation is to start with Giovanni 50/50 Balanced Shampoo and John Masters Organics Citrus and Neroli Detangler. They are both widely available and a great introduction into hair care that’s better for you and the planet.
