Liz Zorn: Soivohlé Natural Artisan Cologne Suite

First let me give credit to Nathan Branch for the inspiration to take the following photographs. I would never have had the idea to chronicle my experience of opening Liz Zorn’s beautifully wrapped package without his gorgeous blog. When her Soivohlé Natural Artisan Cologne Suite sample set arrived, I wanted to capture the care she had taken to create this artistic moment, no matter how fleeting. So many thanks again to Nathan for allowing me to think of taking these photographs, and to Liz Zorn for crafting a such a beautiful presentation.

Before I breakdown the individual fragrances, I want to express how impressed I am with all four Natural Artisan Colognes. They are unique, fascinating, complex and most importantly, beautiful to wear. Cologne can either bring to mind a masculine fragrance or a lighter scent due to a low concentration of essential oils (and/or aroma chemicals). I don’t know what the concentrations are, but these are not lightweights nor are they strictly masculine. Both women and men alike will adore them.

Ylang n Pepper

The Soivohlé website describes this natural cologne as a dry, semi-floral and I wholeheartedly agree. There is nothing juicy or heady in this ylang ylang flower, it’s crisp and clean and the pink pepper overrides the super-sweet flourishes that tend to accompany this essence. Pink pepper has become rather ubiquitous in perfumery as of late, and in my opinion has come to mean a whole lot of nothing. When I see it listed in perfume notes, it doesn’t necessarily mean the fragrance will sparkle with peppery brightness, or be enlivened with hints of spiciness. Well my friends, Liz Zorn knows how to make her scents spicy, and Ylang n Pepper got spice! There’s also a hint of the citrusy-neroli type floral aspect of ylang ylang that becomes more present in the heart which blends seamlessly with its peppery dryness. In fact, this cologne is so dry, it takes on a woody quality. Ultimately though in the drydown, the pepper fades and the floral sweetness of ylang ylang stands alone.

Vetiver n Guaiac

Can I gush for a moment? I love, love, love this fragrance! I am admittedly smitten with vetiver which explains my preference a smidge. But Ms. Zorn has blended an intricate down-in-the-soil rich cologne that is also exhilarating and radiant as it bursts with lavender, tobacco and spices. Even though I am a full-fledged vetiver-lover, if spicy fragrances are too tenacious or linear, I tire of them and won’t reach for the bottle. As I mentioned above, these colognes are complex, and Vetiver n Guaiac is the most complex of the bunch. It evolves from its spicy, richly earthy opening, to a more grassy and herbaceous, yet powdery heart. Not being a perfumer, my presumption is that the lavender coaxes the herbal quality from the vetiver, while the amber base brings forth vetiver’s powdery side.

After a couple hours of this gorgeous heart, a soft vanillic floral emerges. I had to write Ms. Zorn to ask if there were floral notes in Vetiver n Guaiac, and aside from violet leaf absolute, there is not. The benzoin in her amber base, combined with the vanilla (and possibly the violet leaf) create an unexpected and beautifully subtle drydown. To clarify, the beginning and middle were not subtle, nor would I want them to be. Vetiver n Guaiac has terrific sillage, as do all the colognes, and impressive lasting power, 4-5 hours at least.

Geranium Rose Mint

Geranium scents have a very distinct aroma when they are made with the essential oil. In its pure form the essence is quite sharp and lively, which Geranium Rose Mint is not. The topnotes were surprisingly mellow for a fragrance with the words geranium and mint in the name. Its subtle geranium piquancy leans towards the rosy side of rose geranium, and cedar then makes it all the more easygoing. What was fascinating, is that after about an hour, the breezy menthol-esque quality of the mint came alive rather than in the topnotes. In the drydown this became a cozy, rosy cedar even in the presence of the mint. The evolution of these colognes has been stunning.

Lavender n Patchouli

I can’t imagine that composing the perfect blend of lavender and patchouli would be an easy task as a perfumer. Even the casual perfume wearer can attest to patchouli’s ability to overtake a perfume and kill it, and lavender’s potent herbal nature must be a challenge to balance. But Ms. Zorn nailed this one, as the lavender essential oil, lavender absolute and patchouli neither compete with nor overwhelm one another. Rather, they are harmoniously blended so that they become enhanced versions of themselves, yet more subdued and more wearable than usual. Lavender n Patchouli was also created with Ms. Zorn’s amber base which has benzoin, labdanum, tolu balsam, and lesser amounts of wood and balsam notes. In addition to the woody amber blend, vanilla in the mix creates powdery curves in this herbal and earthy unisex fragrance.

Soivohlé Natural Artisan Colognes are available at the Soivohlé website and are very reasonably priced:

$18 for 0.33oz bottle

$70 for the 4 bottle set

$12 for the 2ml sampler set (photographed above)

For The Good of The Pits: Natural Deodorants Reviewed

Dr. Hauschka Floral Deodorant has been my staple for a year now. I have not felt the need to seek out a different deodorant because it performs very well, smells great, and the bottle itself lasts a long time; well over 6 months. Yet, out of all the questions I am asked regarding beauty products, “what deodorant do you recommend?” has been the most frequent. Friends, family, and even a few readers have requested this review. So rather than rely on my “holy grail” find, I decided to do some testing for the good of the pits. None of the deodorants I tested contain aluminum, petrochemicals, phtlalates, or parabens, and three of the four are organic.

You’ll notice that these deodorants are not inexpensive. Prior to discovering Dr. Hauschka’s, I tried many of the cheaper natural standards that you all might have tried; Tom’s, Jason, and Nature’s Gate, without much luck. So I stepped up the price point to Dr. Hauschka, and found that it was more than worth it, especially considering how long it lasts.

Here’s the rating scale I devised for the reviews:

10=pits that smell like you just got out of the shower after scrubbing with a soapy loofah.

0=you just ran a marathon, scrubbed your pits with onions, and then went camping for a week and didn’t shower.

264Dr. Hauschka Deodorant Floral $23:
1) After using Dr. Hauschka’s deodorant in the morning, and having a day of regular activity; pits=9. On a sunny day after walking around; pits=8.
2) After a work-out; pits=7-8. (When I am working out, I expect to sweat because none of these deodorants are anti-perspirants).
3) Able to neutralize B.O. that’s already there; pits=8.
4) Does not sting when applied after shaving.
5) Roll-on. No whiteness.
6) Scent is lovely, gentle spicy rose. Does not compete with fragrance of the day, but could if you are sensitive to scent.
7) Recyclable glass bottle.
8) Organic!

13302_inMiessence Tahitian Breeze and Ancient Spice Roll-On Deodorant $8.95:

1) After a day of regular activity; pits=9
2) After a work-out; pits=7
3) Able to neutralize B.O.; pits=7
4) This one did sting when I applied right after shaving.
5) Roll-on. No whiteness.
6) Tahitian scent is a mild patchouli/floral, Ancient Spice is spicy/citrus.  Both dissipate quickly and do not compete with fragrance of the day.
7) Recyclable #1 plastic bottle.
8) Organic!

280Weleda Citrus Deodorant $8.25:
1) After day of regular activity; pits=7.
2) After a work-out; pits=6.
3) Not able to neutralize B.O.
4) Did not use after shaving, but does have alcohol as first ingredient, so this might be a concern. EDIT: Did not sting after shaving.
5) Spray. No whiteness. Dripped down arm and that was a little annoying.
6) Barely perceptible citrus scent.
7) Recyclable glass bottle.
8) Organic!

05-08-09-lavanillaLavanila The Healthy Deodorant in Vanilla Lavender $18:

1) After a day of regular activity; pits=9.
2) After work-out; pits=8.
3) Able to neutralize B.O; pits=9
4) Does not sting after shaving.
5) Solid. Left a little bit of whiteness, probably varies on amount you use.
6) Unisex, musky lavender scent. Pretty strong, might interfere with fragrance. Pleasant, does not resemble overbearing drug store type scent.
7) Non-recyclable plastic.
*Not organic

Update: Lavanila uses “nature identical oils” in their fragrances and body products which are synthetic.

Overall, I was highly impressed with the new deodorants I tested, most notably Miessence and Lavanila. Both were effective deodorants and each one offers something Dr. Hauschka’s does not. Miessence has a much better price than Dr. Hauschka’s, and is organic. I also appreciate having a solid deodorant option that Lavanila provides, as it neutralizes end of the day B.O. a little better than Dr. Hauschka’s. So there are pros and cons to each one, but they are all good, if not excellent, and I hope this helps in the quest for happy pits.

Peonies: A Poem by Mary Oliver

The other day, a visiting yoga instructor began and ended class with this poem. The focus of the month at the studio is the heart chakra, which the pink peony can open, bringing awareness to the importance of those around us. She didn’t mention that, but I wonder if she knows it from her chakra reading or possibly intuitively. Peonies is a powerful poem and I want to share it with you all. If you have a favorite peony fragrance, please comment below. I don’t have one, and would love to discover a fragrance that captures this dynamic flower.

il_430xN.70062225

This morning the green fists of the peonies are getting ready
to break my heart
as the sun rises,
as the sun strokes them with his old, buttery fingers

and they open —
pools of lace,
white and pink —
and all day the black ants climb over them,

boring their deep and mysterious holes
into the curls,
craving the sweet sap,
taking it away

to their dark, underground cities —
and all day
under the shifty wind,
as in a dance to the great wedding,

the flowers bend their bright bodies,
and tip their fragrance to the air,
and rise,
their red stems holding

all that dampness and recklessness
gladly and lightly,
and there it is again —
beauty the brave, the exemplary,

blazing open.
Do you love this world?
Do you cherish your humble and silky life?
Do you adore the green grass, with its terror beneath?

Do you also hurry, half-dressed and barefoot, into the garden,
and softly,
and exclaiming of their dearness,
fill your arms with the white and pink flowers,

with their honeyed heaviness, their lush trembling,
their eagerness
to be wild and perfect for a moment, before they are
nothing, forever?

Daybreak Lavender Farms: Full Body Treatment

Perfume collectors and scent hounds love to discuss the indolic nature of certain perfumes, especially those that contain jasmine. So what exactly does indolic mean? This is very interesting. Indoles are produced by bacteria that are found in human feces, and give it a fecal odor. Indoles are also found in flowers such as jasmine. For instance, pure jasmine oil has about 2.5% indole content, according to the scholarly Wikipedia. Orange blossoms, gardenias, and tuberose are also indolic flowers and depending on the concentration, can lend a voluptuous and sultry redolence to a perfume. But if you’re new to the term and you’re thinking: Perfume can smell like poop? The answer is: not literally. But kind of. Maybe you’ve never noticed it before in your deep jasmine fragrances, but it’s a little like hiking through fecund woods on a muggy summer day and smelling a skunk in the far off distance. Some people are repelled by that scent, while some are drawn to a little earthy skankiness.

il_430xN.66803417

Now you’ll know what I mean when I say Daybreak Lavender Farm’s Jasmine is not, let me repeat, not indolic. It is one of the cleanest jasmines I have ever smelled. I’m sure many of you are tired of the exaltation of indolic jasmines, and if you are, this review is for you. Daybreak’s Jasmine, also called Taj Majal, is not of the musky variety either, which makes it quite unique because “clean” typically means “musky”. Their jasmine blend is richly floral, soapy (even when it’s not soap) and elegant. After applying the Taj Majal Body Balm, the word that comes to mind is pure. Pure, because my skin smells of soft jasmine petals without any musk or hint of tangy bodily, ahem, aromas…it’s just clean. I never thought I’d be attracted to such a tropical floral, but I’m drawn to Daybreak’s jasmine on hot days when I don’t want a lot of fussiness.

As for the products themselves, I have been duly impressed with their 100% natural ingredients, many of which are organic and grown on their farm. When I placed an order for several skincare items (the By U 4 U Facial Cleanser is wonderful), Jody Byrne, the owner, was very generous to send me a wide variety of Jasmine and Taj Majal body products to sample and these were the stand-outs:

My favorite everyday product: Jasmine Flower Shea Butter Soap with 33% Shea Butter comes in a big brick that you cut into bars yourself. I wasn’t sure I’d like the idea of cutting the bars, but now I love it. This allows you to make the soap the size you want, and I’ve also cut off bars and wrapped them up for friends. The soap creates a superb lather, and because it’s made with 33% shea butter, it is very moisturizing.

My new favorite discovery: Jasmine Lovelight Body Candle was a complete novelty for me as I’d never seen anything like it. The candle itself is made from shea and cocoa butters as well as old comb beeswax, so when you light it and the base melts, you can apply it directly to your skin. Let it cool for a few moments, and pour it on! I found that simply dipping my fingers into the melted candle was plenty for moisturizing my hands and arms as the warmed up “candlotion” covers a lot of area. The lovelight body candle would make a perfect gift, and as the name suggests, lends itself to a little romance.

My favorite indulgence: Moisturizing my hands with a luxurious body butter before bed is a favorite ritual of mine, and the Taj Mahal Extra Shot of Moisture Body Balm is a worthy contender. The ingredients include aloe gel, vegetable squalene from olives, unrefined shea butter, pure lanolin, sweet almond, jojoba, beeswax, and honey. Like all Daybreak body products, you get to choose what scent you want. Mysore Sandalwood, Damask Rose, and Lemon Verbena are just a few of the other offerings. I would love to order this in the Sandalwood Vetiver next go around. The texture of the body balm is very thick, smoothes easily over the skin and is readily absorbed.

My favorite summertime body spray: Taj Majhal Spray Silk is a spray-on moisturizer that has a refreshingly fine mist and provides a light hydration for your skin. On those hot muggy days when you want a light scent and a cool mist, the clean jasmine bouquet of Taj Majal Spray Silk is ideal. Sweet almond, apricot kernel and wheat germ oils provide the moisturizing ingredients of the Spray Silk, and lavender flower tea provides its invigorating quality, especially if you keep the bottle in the refrigerator as the Daybreak website suggests.

Jasmine, be it clean or indolic, may not be your scent preference. Don’t let that stop you from experiencing Daybreak’s wonderful and vast array of  body and skincare offerings. You can also check out Dain’s review of Daybreak’s Rhassoul 5-Piece All-Natural Skin Care System. I too have been using the Rhassoul Complexion Polish along with the Prairie Oat Mint Exfoliating Bar when I want to exfoliate my face and back. Be on the look-out for a more extensive Scent Hive review of those two products in the coming months.

New Scent Hive Banner designed by Hadley Hutton.

Did you notice the new banner? It was designed for Scent Hive by Hadley Hutton. Here’s a little bit about this amazing artist.

12

                                                                        pansy perch

Hadley grew up in a home filled with color, with a mother who felt that humanity’s greatest invention was the color wheel. Hadley recalls her mom changing wall colors as often as other people change the sheets. Being surrounded by a vivid palette profoundly influenced her. But rather than paint walls, Hadley’s outlet for her hereditary color addiction is her easel.

On the day little Hadley met an artist who painted for his profession, she formulated her dream of becoming an artist. Her exact words were, “People get paid to do this?” She soon encountered a major obstacle on the path to realizing her dream: the bunny incident. At the tender age of seven, Hadley was unable to draw a bunny as beautifully as her friend Monica. She threw a Richter-scale tantrum, screaming “I can’t draw!” Somehow Hadley found the resolve to keep drawing despite the nay-sayers (including, most notably, herself). She continued to draw, and on and on she drew, right through her graduation with honors from the San Francisco Art Institute. Today Hadley lives her dream working as an illustrator and artist in her hometown, Portland, OR – where she has yet to perfect the bunny.

Hadley’s work is a blend of traditional painting and modern design. She draws inspiration from Asian patterns and motifs, Victorian die cuts, and geometric designs. Her work explores nature’s beauty, people’s influence on their surroundings, and the environment’s influence on people. The works are layered with colored pencil and watercolor pencil drawings, ink, archival digital media, pastels and encaustics.

Hadley’s Philosophy: Less is more. (Except in the case of art supplies – where too much is never enough.)

Sexy Angelic by Honoré des Prés

Calissons1

Sexy Angelic  is an ideal gourmand scent for the summer. It’s a light air-spun confection that wears easily in the warm weather. Sexy Angelic is centered around a calisson accord which was inspired by the town of Aix-in-Provence in the South of France. Calissons are treats made from a paste of sugar, melons and almonds that are covered with royal ice (white icing). Sexy Angelic entices its wearer with notes of licorice from angelica seeds and I gotta be honest here, I-don’t-know-what from Hemlock flowers. If you do, please let me know!

47504So I’ll focus on what I do know, and that is that Sexy Angelic is delectable. The calisson accord is loaded with crystallized sugary-almond goodness that is uplifted by the herbal licorice aspect. It’s lovely on the drydown as the green herbaciousness dissipates allowing for honeyed woods to meld into a skin scent. It’s the farthest thing from cloying or heavy and it just might be the gourmand for those of you who don’t typically go for gourmands.

One of the complaints heard across the blogs is that the Honoré des Prés line does not last. At all. I have found this to be true with two of the scents, Nu Green and Honore’s Trip. They only lasted mere minutes on my skin. Chaman’s Party (reviewed here) on the other hand has wonderful staying power, which Sexy Angelic doesn’t quite match up to. But, when sprayed very liberally it lasts about 1-2 hours, considerably close to the skin. It wears more like an Eau Fraiche than an Eau de Toilette and if I were the owner of a full bottle I’d be spraying it with wanton abandon before getting dressed.

Sexy Angelic is one of five fragrances from the Honoré des Prés line of organic perfumes. Olivia Giacobetti created them and is well known for many other perfumes such as Philosykos for Diptyque, Navegar and Passage d’Enfer for L’Artisan, and Hiris for Hermes (just to name a few). She was asked by Christopher David, the owner of Honoré des Prés to create an all natural and organic line of perfumes and clearly she was up for the challenge. I am hoping body products are to follow as a body butter in Sexy Angelic would be absolutely heavenly.

SUNSCREEN

Amazingly, the sun has been bursting forth in all its glory in the northwest. I know we’re supposed to wear sunscreen on a daily basis, even here, but mine has only been getting consistent play the past two weeks. I’m not advocating my behavior. But in this part of the country where vitamin D deficiency is as common as a caffeine addiction, it’s painful to put a barrier on your skin when you might not see the sun for two weeks. But now that the sun’s rays are shining at full force, there’s no denying the need for the sunscreen.

il_430xN.72016962

Santaverde makes a gorgeous sunscreen that I have enjoyed using the past two years. Santaverde uses organic aloe vera as the first ingredient in all of their products rather than water like most others and their sunscreen “emulsion” feels and smells wonderful when applying. The SPF is only 18 though and most dermatologists recommend using 30, and the other problem is I had a difficult time finding Santaverde Sunscreen Emulsion available on the internet. Only Nature of Beauty seems to be carrying it right now and they are currently out of stock. So let me turn your attention to a new sunscreen that I like just as much that does have an SPF of 30.

John Masters Organics is well known for exceptional hair care, their Citrus and Neroli Detangler will always rank high on my list, but their skincare line is deserving of attention as well. The SPF 30 Natural Mineral Sunscreen, like Santaverde’s sunscreen, is made with organic aloe vera juice (although it is the second ingredient not the first) in addition to jojoba oil and shea butter which makes for a wonderfully moisturizing sunscreen. The mineral sunscreen is provided by titanium dioxide and zinc oxide, and I’ll answer the question I know you are wondering…no, there is no ghostly white cast from John Masters Organics Natural Mineral Sunscreen. Two pumps from the bottle completely covered my face and neck with little blending effort. The sunscreen melted into my skin and there was no white trace of it to be found. There is no scent and no greasy residue and best of all, it works! Full disclosure though, I do have olive skin so I’d be very interested to hear what a fair skinned gal or guy has to report.

As for my preferred sunscreen for the beach and pool, Soleo Organics SPF 30 wins by a wide margin. It is rated the #1 sunscreen by the Environmental Working Group Skin Deep Cosmetic Safety Data Base and has been not only mine, but my kids’ favorite sunscreen for two summers. Its active ingredient is 22.3% zinc oxide which protects from UVA and UVB rays and amazingly does not leave your skin white. It does go on a bit greasy, that’s why I leave it for serious sunning and my kids. It’s made with macadamia oil, grapeseed oil, and vitamin e, so it glides effortlessly over your reluctant children’s skin which takes some of the hassle out of this unpleasant chore. Best of all, it doesn’t sting their eyes or yours, and when the label says waterproof, they mean it. We brought Soleo Organics on two trips to Hawaii and it did not let us down, even when we were lax with the afternoon reapplications.

So those are my natural and organic sunscreen recommendations. I would love it if you all would share your favorite sunscreen finds in the comments below. Don’t be shy!
